Huawei R&D

June 4, 2018 - The S&T Diplomatic Circle learnt about Huawei's future R&D strategy. One of the core foci is building up the 5G ecosystem. There are 5 interesting use cases: connected drones, connected vehicles, cloud VR/AR, connected healthcare and wireless robotics. Huawei has a large number of 80,000 R&D employees in 14 R&D centers. Annually, an impressive US$13.8B are invested in R&D (10% of revenues). The accelerated digital transformation is omni-present, but Huawei has a longterm strategy of 20-30 years, which is focusing on connecting the physical and digital world, namely IoT, cloud, and AI. We also learned more about the new mobile phone P20 Pro with three lens AI camera. The phone deploys the world's first smartphone SoC chipset Kirin 970 with dedicated Neural-network Processor Unit (NPU).
