Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation

June 20, 2019 - The June event introduced the S&TDC to China's semiconductor industry. Visiting the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), one of the leading foundries in the world, not only gave an interesting impression of how the SMIC operates but also allowed to gain an overview of the current situation which is influenced by difficult trade relations with the US. SMIC is Mainland China's largest foundry in scale, broadest in technology coverage, and most comprehensive in semiconductor manufacturing services. The company, which is headquartered in Shanghai, provides integrated circuit (IC) foundry and technology services on process nodes from 0.35 micron to 28 nanometers. After a brief tour of the company, a succeeding roundtable with presentations covering SMIC and the Chinese semiconductor market followed by a Q&A session allowed the diplomatic circle to engage in an open discussion about the semiconductor industry, its' current state and where it is headed in the future. A big thank you goes to the team at SMIC for welcoming us as well as to Bart van Hezewijk and David Bekkers from the Consulate General of The Netherlands for organizing this interesting visit.
