March 4, 2021 - The S&T Diplomatic Circle visited the 5G Global Innovation Center in Shanghai’s Hongkou District – designated as the city’s 5G trial district. Launched in 2019, the center serves as an innovative platform to showcase cutting-edge applications of 5G technology from more than 160 5G projects – such as ambulances with 5G – being deployed in Shanghai, encompassing manufacturing, education, healthcare, retail and beyond. By the end of October last year, Shanghai had deployed a total of 31,400 5G outdoor base stations and 49,800 indoor 5G base stations in the city and key suburban areas: the most nationwide. Major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, have achieved full 5G city-wide coverage.
Many thanks to colleague Philippe Delcourt from the Consulate General of Belgium and Yong Lu from Shanghai Data Exchange for their great work in coordinating this visit.
