April 11, 2019 - The S&TDC had a glimpse into modern science with an impressive visit to the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), which is one of the most advanced third generation light sources in the world that helps driving cutting-edge scientific research and innovation in China. Its 15 beam-lines have provided bright x-ray beams to more than 10000 users from universities, institutes, hospitals and high-tech companies from around the China and the world. The large device has been used in many areas of scientific research and industrial development, including biology, physics, material science, chemistry, environmental science, archeology, biomedical applications, medicine or drug development. The SSRF is also actively involved in the training and education of next generation of scientists and engineers. The Shanghai S&T Commission, which is responsible for scientific and technological development of the city as well as supporting the cooperation of domestic and international institutions regarding science and technology, organized this visit and also gave insights to their activities. Their main responsibilities include: International cooperation and exchange; S&T achievement transformation and high-tech industrialization; S&T development planning; Science popularization; S&T legislation and policy; Coordination between system and entities; Resource optimization and system reform; Improving S&T service system; Making and running Programs on S&T.
