June 17, 2025 - a group of 25 people representing 15 member delegations, plus the Delegation of EU to China and the S&T Commission of Shanghai Municipality, visited the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), one of China’s leading large-scale research infrastructures and a center of excellence for advanced scientific research.

SSRF provides highly intense synchrotron light that enables researchers to study the structure and properties of materials at the atomic and molecular level. The facility supports a wide range of scientific fields—from materials science and chemistry to life sciences and environmental research—and plays a key role in enabling cutting-edge discoveries.

The visit offered valuable insights into how such world-class research infrastructures operate, the scale of investment behind them, and the broad international scientific community they support.

In addition to the visit, exchanges with the Shanghai Municipal S&T Commission and the participation of the EU Delegation’s S&T Counsellor offered a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue, share policy perspectives, and further deepen EU–China cooperation in science and technology, in particular in the area of Shanghai.
